Will mortgage rates go down after Fed meeting day on Wednesday?

The market is priced for a hold, not a cut. Traders put the odds that the Fed holds rates steady on Wednesday at over 90%, per the CME FedWatch Tool, as reported by CNBC on October 26, 2026.

On the mortgage side, Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at 7.32% as of October 22, 2026. Freddie Mac releases the survey weekly on Thursdays, so the next reading is due Thursday, October 29.

Per Freddie Mac, the survey results are based on mortgage rates from thousands of loan applications submitted to Freddie Mac from lenders across the country. Each weekly result is an average of loan rates offered from the prior Thursday through Wednesday, and Freddie Mac publishes it each Thursday at noon ET.

The hold odds come from CME FedWatch, which, per CME Group, tracks the probabilities of changes to the Fed rate as implied by 30-Day Fed Funds futures prices.
